Legal Aid seeks lawyer to lead litigation efforts

Community Legal Aid is looking to hire an advocacy director to lead the organization’s litigation and systemic advocacy efforts.

Steve McGarrity, Legal Aid’s executive director, said he hopes this new position will take the nonprofit’s advocacy levels to new heights.

“The issues our clients face aren’t just personal issues,” McGarrity explained. “They’re structural issues, including systemic racism.”

The new advocacy director will be largely focusing on those types of issues, he said.

“Fixing people’s problems one-by-one is important work, for sure. But we need a broader strategic approach if we really want to make an impact in addressing poverty in our communities -- and we do.”

The addition of this new position comes as Legal Aid has been implementing a multi-year strategic plan, and in the throws of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to McGarrity, the advocacy director will “round out” Legal Aid’s executive leadership team, which is largely new in the past five years.

“We’re taking intentional, strategic steps to make a deeper impact in the communities we serve, but to do it in a sustainable way,” he said. “This new position is deeply rooted in this idea, in that he/she/they will lead us in charting the course for Legal Aid’s litigation legacy.”
