Trumbull judge honored at Statehouse

Logan recognized for career helping residents who can’t afford attorneys

Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge, the Honorable Andrew Logan, was awarded The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation’s Presidential Award for Pro Bono Service during the Ohio State Bar Association's annual meeting.

The award comes after a lifetime of trying to make the courts accessible, especially to people who can’t afford an attorney or are facing legal hardship, said Steven McGarrity, executive director of Community Legal Aid.

“Judge Logan is a shining example of someone who was in a position to do something to make our justice system more accessible and equitable, and who did it,” McGarrity said.

Legal Aid nominated Judge Logan for the award. The nomination came after nearly 15 years of collaboration between Legal Aid and the court, led by Judge Logan. This collaboration included hosting a Legal Aid attorney onsite at the courthouse to help low-income residents facing foreclosure. Thanks to this work, Trumbull County led the state of Ohio in the number of homes saved during the height of the foreclosure crisis following the Great Recession.

Most recently, Judge Logan led the establishment of the Clarence Darrow Court Clinic, which provides free legal help to low-income residents facing housing or financial problems, including foreclosure, eviction, and debt collection. The project is offered in partnership with Legal Aid and the Trumbull County Bar Association.

“We are so grateful to Judge Logan and his team at the Court,” said Rachel Nader, Legal Aid’s Advocacy Director. “We were thrilled to have this opportunity to recognize his contributions to our community.”
