Legal Aid celebrates 65 years with event next month
Annual event honors community partners, pro bono volunteers, and staff members
Each year, Community Legal Aid hosts an end-of-summer event to celebrate the organization’s accomplishments for the year. And this year, the event will mark a special anniversary occasion for the non-profit law firm.
“We’re thrilled to be celebrating 65 years,” said Executive Director Steven McGarrity. “That’s 65 years of fighting for access to justice for the most vulnerable neighbors in our communities. It’s also 65 years of partnering with local private attorneys who donate their time taking pro bono cases. Its 65 years of educating the public and community partners about the needs of low-income families.”
Legal Aid’s Anniversary Celebration will recognize volunteers, community partners, and staff members for their exceptional contributions to the organization’s mission of “justice for all.” This year’s honorees include:
- Akron Children’s Hospital: Community Partner Award. The Hospital is being recognized for their collaboration in Legal Aid’s medical-legal partnership Health Education Advocacy and Law (HEAL)
- Attorney Nancy Yakubek: Pro Bono Award. Yakubek is being recognized for her role as a pro bono attorney in Legal Aid’s Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP).
- Paralegal Alicia Williamson: Staff Support Award. Williamson is being recognized for her work with victims and survivors of domestic violence.
- Attorney Dana Goldstein: Staff Attorney Award: Goldstein is being recognized for her work with clients, particularly through in income tax work.
This year’s event will also feature special guest speaker Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, a life-long advocate for access to justice.
“Our staff, volunteers, and partners work hard throughout the year to ensure the best outcomes possible for our clients,” shared Board Chair Nancy Grim. “We like to celebrate that with the community as we look forward to many more years in service of our goal of justice for all.”

The 65th Anniversary Celebration Dinner and Silent Auction will take place on Thursday, September 28, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Greystone Hall (103 South High Street, Akron, OH 4313).
