Legal Aid Helps Local Parents Advocate for their Struggling School Children -

With the school year now in full swing, report cards and parent-teacher conferences are beginning to reveal where school children may be slipping behind. At its free upcoming school advocacy workshops, Community Legal Aid is helping local parents to identify the right resources for their struggling students. Often, these are just a request away. However, knowing what to ask for can present the biggest hurdle, says Legal Aid Supervising Attorney Andrew Neuhauser.

“We see parents are often intimated by the process of accessing the right education services available to them,” says Neuhauser.

Legal Aid’s LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) workshops give parents a roadmap to accessing school resources best for their children. Offered for a second time, the workshops take place Thursday, Nov. 15 at Windemere Community Learning Center, 2283 Windemere Ave., Akron; Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the REACH Opportunity Center, 390 W. Crosier Street, Akron; and Thursday, Dec. 13 at Findley Community Learning Center, 65 W. Tallmadge Ave., Akron. All workshops take place from 6-8 p.m. and include free food/refreshments as well as children’s activities.

Legal Aid is partnering with ARC, Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron Summit County Library, Akron Summit Community Action, Akron Public Schools and Summit Education Initiative for this project.

The free workshops will cover resources available to student from grades kindergarten through 12th. To register, go to www.communtylegalaid.org/events or text SCHOOL to 77453.
