​​​​​​​Legal Aid offers free legal workshops and programs in December

Community Legal Aid is offering free workshops next month to anyone who may need legal assistance or who has an interest in these legal topics. All programs are taught by attorneys and are free and open to the public.

All Community Legal Aid events can be found at www.communitylegalaid.org/events. Check back periodically, as more workshops may be added.

 

Upcoming Events and Workshops

 

Legal aid at WinterFest (Summit County) – Saturday, Dec. 1, 9-noon. Legal Aid will join Summit DD for WinterFest at Lock 3, 200 South Main Street, Akron. Learn about Legal Aid services and enjoy an afternoon of fun activities.

Financial Wellness Workshop (Mahoning County) – Tuesday, Dec. 4, 1-3 p.m. This free workshop provides information on debt mitigation, bankruptcy, and financial help. Call our HelpLine at 800-998-9454 for the location and to register.

Legal Aid at Taft Elementary School (Youngstown) – Tuesday, Dec. 4, 4:30 p.m., Taft Elementary School, 730 E. Avondale Ave.) Free and open to residents of the Taft Promise Neighborhood. Meet with a Legal Aid attorney to discuss your legal needs and see if you qualify for assistance. To schedule an appointment call 330-362-8350.

Legal Office Hours at Taft Promise Neighborhood (Youngstown) – Wednesday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m., 3025 South Avenue (corner of South and Boston), at the old Youngstown fire station. Free and open Taft Promise Neighborhood residents, meet with a Legal Aid attorney to discuss your legal needs and find out if you qualify for assistance. Custody Clinic: Learn how to represent yourself (Stark County) -- Wednesday, Dec. 5, 1 p.m., Legal Aid’s Stark County Office, 306 Market Ave. North, Canton. Learn about the custody process and required forms.  Apply at the Legal Aid Helpline: 800-998-9454.

Legal Clinic: Agreed Custody (Stark County) – Wednesday, Dec. 5, 1:15 p.m., 306 Market Ave. North, Canton. This clinic is specific to cases where both parties have agreed to a proposed custody plan. Apply at the Legal Aid Helpline: 800-998-9454.

Divorce Clinic: Learn how to represent yourself (Stark County) – Thursday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m. Free to those who qualify, Legal Aid’s divorce clinics are designed to help educate clients on the divorce process and help them complete the forms required to petition the court for a divorce.  Apply at Legal Aid's HelpLine: 800-998-9454.

Professionalism and Limited Scope – A free CLE for attorneys, Tuesday, Dec.  11., 1 p.m., American Red Cross, First Energy Room, 501 W. Market Street, Akron. This CLE is designed to provide and understanding of the Limited Scope Retainer and the Rules of Professional Conduct governing limited scope representation. Legal Clinic at the Front Porch Café (Summit County) – Tuesday, Dec. 11, 4-5 p.m., 798 Grant Street, Akron. Free and open to the public, this education clinic will present Legal Aid advocates on hand to answer questions about expungements and record sealing, driver’s license reinstatement, and other general legal issues.

Free and open to former and current clients of the Medina County Battered Women’s Shelter. Attendees can meet with an attorney to discuss legal issues. Preregistration required. Homeowner Information Class (Stark County) – Thursday, Dec. 13, 5 p.m. at the Stark Main Library, 715 Market Ave. N., Canton. Free and open to the public, this class covers mediation preparation, foreclosure, mortgage payment challenges and solutions. Attendees should bring all of the paperwork they have received thus far to the class.

Legal Aid at Akron Urban League’s Community Meal – Thursday, Dec. 13, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Free to the public, this community meal will offer guests the opportunity to learn about Legal Aid services. Akron Urban League, 440 Vernon Odom Blvd., Akron.

Learning Is For Everyone (LIFE) – Thursday, Dec. 13, Findley Community Learning Center, 65 W. Tallmadge Ave., Akron. This free school advocacy workshop for parents and guardians of school children describes the educational services available for local school children. Parents/guardians learn how to work with their children's schools to ensure they receive the appropriate support. Refreshments and children's activities will be offered.
